Choosing a Breeder
If you are looking for a puppy, choosing the a premium breeder is extremely important, but it can be difficult and discouraging. Don’t go by what local shelters and rescues say below is a list of good questions you should ask your breeders when searching for a dog. Familiarize yourself with problems in the breed and discuss them with your Veterinarian. The problems most commonly seen in Mastiffs are hip and elbow dysplasia, and eye and thyroid problems. All these things should be checked, eyes once a year, and the breeder should be willing and able to provide you with copies of the certification (exam sheet in the case of eyes).
How long have you been breeding?
The Breeder should be able to give you a clear answer and should be able to show you the puppies and let you see how they interact with other puppies and humans.
What health tests to you do on your adults before choosing to breed them?
Very important that they have received there shots and other check ups.
Can you provide me with a list of references... people who have pups from you?
(CALL THEM!) Get all the information you can , see if the puppies are depressed, don’t know how to interact or are just sick. You determine whether you want to proceed with that breeder….
What will you supply with your puppies?
Most breeders will supply a pedigree automatically, If you are searching for a pet puppy, you may not think the pedigree is important, but get one anyway. The breeders readiness to provide it shows how well the breeding was planned, plus it allows you to see the history of the lines and ask any questions about line breeding. A good breeder will provide you with a minimum of 2 weeks of vitamens, food, antibiotics and anything that dog has been familiar with since its birth like a toy or something like that and of course the appropriate paperwork and dog registrations.
